Hurst Lime Kilns... A step back in time!

We were happy to stop at Hurstville Lime Kilns (GC1AV4A), south of Dubuque, IA.  What an interesting place!

The 4 Kilns here were used to process limestone into usable lime.  They super heated the kilns by burning tons of timber.  When Portland cement became more popular in the 1920s, the kilns were used less and less, until finally they were shut down and left as silent memories of a time-gone-by.

Using Mac as a measuring stick to help determine the height of a kiln for the EC.

The county maintains the area as an historic park.  Of course, area geocachers have helped too.  In fact, at the same time we were hosting our event in St Louis, the cachers here were meeting for a CITO. And yes, the area looked great!
