TTMS make a U-turn (for real!) and discover a grotto!

After missing a turn - off in rural Wisconsin, we found ourselves needing to backtrack a few miles.  Always wanting to make something good of a little misdirection, we checked to see if there were any interesting caches nearby.  Hooray, a virtual!  With more than 100 favorites!  What a great stop this was... Dickeyville Grotto (GCGAXY).

The shrine and gardens were built from 1925-1930 by Catholic priest, Father Mathias Wernerus.  The whole area is made of rocks, shells, pottery pieced, jewelry, marbles, fossils, and more, all embedded in concrete and mortar.  Even the "rope" railing was rock.  Everywhere we looked there was something new to see, encrusted in and on walls, niches, statues, and displays.  Father Wernerus had no architectural drawings, no blueprints, just a vision.

We were extra pleased to meet a couple from Chicago who were geocaching their way through several Midwest states, Razor1965 and Razor's Wife.  We wished them safe travels and got back on our route for more adventures!
