The Geocaching International Film Festival

Our first official Seattle geo-event of the weekend!!  Geocaching International Film Festival (GIFF)

The setting was perfect!  The Gas Works Park sits right on the bank of Lake Union and provides a perfect view of Seattle's infamous Space Needle!

The park itself is pretty interesting, so we took a little time to walk around and check it out while we waited for the festivities to begin!  The plant was originally constructed in 1906 to manufacture gas from coal.  It was later converter to process crude oil... and then made obsolete by natural gas in the 1950s.

You never know WHO will show up at a geo-event!

MagellanMan and the Waysiders

Most of the winners were selected by the GroundSpeak staff prior to the showing, but we did get to vote on the Fan Favorite.  Clyde and I actually submitted the same guess... but Swiz went rogue... and she actually picked the winner!!

Since the GIFF is bringing the films to all MEGA events (yes, even the Going Caching MEGA event!), I won't say much about the films... but I will tell you this.  Be prepared to laugh, shed a tear... and sit in AWE of the great talent in the geocaching community!

P.S. - Bring pencil and paper to the showings!  There are a few really cool caches showcased in the films that you may just want to add to your caching bucket list!

After the festival, we decided to tackle one of the Lab caches.  Lab caches are only available at MEGA events so we knew these would be gone soon.   There were 3 Lab caches series for the weekend.  Ballards Brewery Tour, Quirky Seattle Tour, and Seattle Adventure Tour.  We chose a cache from Quirky (seriously, you didn't expect something different, did you??)

We were warned (by a previous log) and yep, it really happens!   The Lab cache is actually at the same location as a tricky traditional cache.   While searching for the traditional, a homeless man approached us.  He has become quite and icon at ground zero.   He "dramatically" points out the cache's location and has even caught on to much of the geocaching lingo, even though he himself doesn't partake in the game.... but it has become a business for him.  He jumps in to help hoping his efforts will net him a little tip.  :)   Gotta love the entrepreneur spirit!
